Bid on a Vintage Autographed 1962 Nebraska Football Helmet

Looking for that perfect holiday gift for mom or dad or grandma or grandpa ... or both? is offering something that longtime Husker fans will cherish forever ... a vintage 1962 Nebraska football helmet signed by Husker players, coaches and staff who returned to Lincoln early this fall to celebrate Nebraska's NCAA record 300th consecutive sellout at Memorial Stadium.

The first game in the ongoing record sellout streak was against Missouri on Nov. 3, 1962. On September 26th this season, Nebraska players wore throwback uniforms for the 300th sellout game against Louisiana Lafayette, and the NU Athletic Department honored the former players, coaches and staff who were part of that game with a special reunion celebration that weekend. These helmets are treasured possessions in the hands of the reunion participants, and now four helmets have been made available to Big Red fans on

Two of the four are being auctioned off this week. Bidding for each helmet begins at $300 with minimum incremental bids of $25. Bidding will end for one helmet at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24. Bidding for other helmet will end at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24.

The 1962 team not only was the first team that Devaney coached at Nebraska, but also the first Husker team to win a bowl game (36-34 over Miami in the Gotham Bowl at Yankee Stadium in New York).

The signatures on the helmet will ring a bell with longtime followers of Husker football. The helmet is the real-deal, too ... an authentic, full-sized, vintage, shell-shaped helmet with a classic facemask, old-style rivets and hardware, original patented suspension webbing, genuine leather jaw pads and headband and old-school chinstrap.

The player signatures include Ernie Bonistall, Curtis Bryan, Dick Callahan, (co-captain) Dwain Carlson, Dennis Claridge, Larry Donovan, Billy Johnson, John Kirby, John Koinzan, Noel Martin, Joe McNulty, William Paschall, Tyrone Robertson, Jed Rood, Willie Ross, Lyle Sittler, Maynard Smidt, John Strohmyer, Gary Toogood, Larry Tomlinson, Doug Tucker, John Vujevich and Gene Young.

The helmet also was signed by four members of Devaney's first Husker coaching staff who attended the reunion - John Melton (freshman coach), Jim Ross (ends and defensive backs), Carl Selmer (offensive line) and Tom Osborne, Nebraska's athletic director who was a graduate assistant coach at NU in 1962.

In addition, the helmet carries the signatures of Nebraska Sports Information Director Emeritus Don "Fat Fox" Bryant and George Sullivan, the 1962 Husker team trainer. The Nebraska press box is named in honor of Bryant, and the NU training room was dedicated in Sullivan's honor.

Making the helmet even more valuable are the signatures of the late Bob and Phyllis Devaney's two children. Son Mike Devaney, who lives in Arizona, and daughter Pat Devaney, who lives in California, returned to Lincoln for the 300th sellout celebration. That memorable weekend was billed as "A Tribute to Tradition" in honor of Nebraska fans who have packed the stadium for nearly half a century and in honor of Devaney, the coach who built a foundation that has stood the test of time.

** A $10 shipping fee will be added to the winning bid ** Funds generated from this auction will directly benefit the student-athletes within The University of Nebraska Department of Athletics.
