CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gabby Tyler, a member of the Charlotte women’s basketball program since the 2010-11 campaign, has elected not to use her final season of eligibility in 2014-15 and end her collegiate playing career.
“We will always put the health of our student-athletes above all else, and while we are disappointed to lose Gabby, this is the best decision for her and her future,” head coach Cara Consuegra said. “We wish her all the best in the next chapter of her life and she will always be a 49er.”
Tyler played three years (2010-11, 2011-12, 2013-14), earning a redshirt for the 2012-13 campaign after suffering a preseason injury. She again was bothered by a similar injury late this past year, causing her to miss some action, including the team’s WNIT First Round contest at St. Bonaventure.
She completed her university undergraduate requirements and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with minors in women’s studies and American studies in three years, walking across the commencement stage in May 2013.
An Emporia, Va., native, she made an immediate impact on the program, earning All-Atlantic 10 Rookie Team accolades in 2011. She was selected as the Atlantic 10’s Rookie of the Week four times that season, including three unanimous honors, setting a single-season school record for weekly rookie-of-the-week plaudits.
Her first career start came Nov. 27, 2010, against No. 6 Duke. She finished her career in the starting five 41 times among her 89 games played, including all 26 contests in which she saw the floor in 2013-14. She suited up for six career postseason contests for the Niners during her career.
Tyler’s best year statistically was her last, leading Charlotte with 12.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest. She also amassed a career-high 41 blocked shots, ranked among the Conference USA leaders with a 57.1 field goal percentage and dropped in 73.3 percent of her free throw attempts.
She finished her career with 34 double-digit scoring games, including 18 in 2013-14. She posted seven career double-doubles, four this past year, with her career-best 22 points and 12 rebounds helping to lead the 49ers to a road victory at UTEP Jan. 18, 2014, giving the Miners their first home loss of the campaign. Tyler’s career-high 14 rebounds also came this last season, Dec. 29, 2013, against Furman.
She ends her career with 8.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest and served as a co-captain this past year.
