Birmingham, Ala.- UAB's power proves to be too much for the Niners in Conference USA play on Friday night, as Charlotte falls to UAB with back-to-back 8-0 losses. Charlotte drops to 16-24 on the season and 7-12 in C-USA play. With the doubleheader win, UAB moves to 29-19 and 13-6 in league play.
Charlotte struggled at the plate in the doubleheader tallying seven hits and no runs. Three Niners tallied a hit in the double header. Samantha Slade (Apex, N.C./ Apex HS) and Jessie Fennell (Blaine, Tenn./ Grainger HS) went 2-4 apiece at the plate, while Jackie Kleinsmith (Santa Maria, Calif./ Righetti HS) picked up three hits going 2-2 in the nightcap.
UAB jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Caitlin Attfield led off the game with a triple to center field. Attfield would come around to score on a single to left field. Kristen and Megan McGrath grabbed singles in the inning to plate another run for a 2-0 cushion.
Charlotte's Fennell picked up the Niners' first hit in the top of the third inning with a base knock to left field.
The Blazers used a three run third inning with a M. McGrath solo home run followed by a single and another Blazer home run to build a comfortable 5-0 lead. UAB posted another three run inning in the bottom of the fourth off K. McGrath's two run homer. Mary Warren followed that up with a solo shot to give the Blazers an 8-0 lead.
Sam Slade singled to lead off the top of the fourth inning. Jackie Kleinsmith picked up the final hit for the Niners with an infield single. Back-to-back punch outs stranded the Niners in scoring position.
The night cap was a different story for the Niners in the early innings only allowing a run through the first three innings.
Jackie Kleinsmith picked up the first hit for either squad in the top of the second inning with a base knock through the left side of the infield. Kleinsmith would pick up her second hit of the contest and third of the night with a single up the middle in the top of the fourth. Sam Slade would pick up a hit through the right side of the infield, but a double play wiped away the chances for the Niners to scratch across a run.
The Blazers would post four runs in the bottom of the fourth and three runs in the bottom of the fifth for a walk-off 8-0 victory.
Lexi Betancourt (Garner, N.C./ West Johnson HS) picked up the loss in game one of the series falling to 15-12 on the season, allowing eight runs off 10 hits in 3.1 innings. Mackenzie Hauser (Lexington, N.C./ North Davidson HS) pitched the final 2/3 of the fourth in a scoreless outing.
