Tulsa, Okla. – Kamil Khalil and Jordi Massalle Ferrer posted singles victories but the Charlotte 49ers (13-7) narrowly lost to 72nd-ranked East Carolina (18-6), 4-2, in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Men’s Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

East Carolina won two doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At number one doubles, Charlotte’s Khalil and Massalle Ferrer suffered only their second loss of the season with an 8-5 setback against East Carolina’s Joran Vliegen and Colin Roller. Khalil and Massalle Ferrer went 14-2 this season. At number three doubles, Charlotte’s Alex Calott and Paul Cisti lost to East Carolina’s Nicholas Soriano and Patriek Wolterbeek, 8-6. At number two doubles, Charlotte’s Forrest Edwards and Jack Williams did not finish their match with East Carolina’s Mario Martinez and Fredric Lehfeldt since East Carolina already claimed the doubles point. The match was tied at six games apiece.

East Carolina won three singles matches to claim the overall victory. At number one singles, Charlotte’s Edwards lost to Vliegen, who is ranked 25th in the ITA singles rankings, 6-0, 6-1. At number two singles, Charlotte’s Khalil defeated East Carolina Martinez, 6-1, 6-2. At number three singles, Charlotte’s Massalle Ferrer posted his sixth straight victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win over East Carolina’s Damien Brenard. At number four singles, Charlotte’s Calott lost to East Carolina’s Soriano, 6-4, 6-3. At number five singles, Charlotte’s Williams lost in three hard fought sets, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6, to East Carolina’s Lehfeldt. At number six singles, Charlotte’s Cisti did not finish his match with East Carolina’s Roller. The match was in the third set when it was stopped with the score, 4-6, 6-3, 6-5.
