Clinton, SC – Behind four singles victories and singles and doubles wins by Kamil Khalil and Jordi Massalle Ferrer, the Charlotte 49ers (11-5) handed Presbyterian (23-6) their first home loss of the season with a 4-2 road victory.

“This was a great win for us,” Charlotte coach Billy Boykin said. “Anytime you beat a team with 23 wins on the year that is something. Presbyterian is a great team and we have a lot of respect for their program.”

Presbyterian won two doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At number one doubles, Charlotte’s Khalil and Massalle Ferrer improved to 12-1 on the season with an 8-5 win over Presbyterian’s Rafael Berghaus and Joel Roberts. At number two doubles, Charlotte’s Forrest Edwards and Jack Williams lost to Presbyterian’s Ben Kelley and Ryan Miller, 8-6. At number three doubles, Charlotte’s Alex Calott and Paul Cisti lost to Presbyterian’s Diego Manzanas and Grayson Mills, 8-7.

“We lost a tough doubles point,” Boykin said. “However, we responded with good play early in singles and that was the key. In singles, I was pleased with how our guys created early leads and then protected them with high percentage play. Overall, we constructed points pretty well today.”

Charlotte won four singles matches to claim the overall victory. At number one singles, Charlotte’s Edwards lost to Presbyterian’s Mills, 6-0, 6-3. At number two singles, Charlotte’s Khalil won his second straight match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Presbyterian’s Berghaus. At number three singles, Charlotte’s Massalle Ferrer improved to 18-6 on the season with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Presbyterian’s Danny Bruce. At number four singles, Charlotte’s Calott did not finish his match with Presbyterian’s Kelley since the 49ers had already clinched the overall victory. The two players split the first two sets, 6-4, 4-6 and Calott was down 2-1 in the third set. At number five singles, Charlotte’s Williams won his 12th match of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Presbyterian’s Manzanas. At number six singles, Charlotte’s Cisti clinched the 49ers win with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Presbyterian’s Gonzalo Asis. Cisti improved to 14-11 on the season with his seventh straight win.
