CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A two-out error in the top of the fifth committed by Charlotte allowed Evansville to take full advantage scoring three unearned runs and a 4-2 victory on Sunday afternoon. The Purple Aces victory on Sunday gave them three out of the four in the weekend series.
“We had a lot of poor at bats early in the game,” commented Head Coach Loren Hibbs. “The mental and physical preparation has to be the same every day and we just haven’t figured that out yet. It’s a matter of preparing the right way and being more consistent with our habits. We’ve got several guys doing the right thing, we just don’t have enough guys doing it. We’re going to keep working, practice pretty good on Tuesday and go to Winthrop on Wednesday.”
The Niners got off to a positive start with an early run in the bottom of the first. Mikal Hill singled to center with two outs before later scoring on a Des Roberts infield single to short. Roberts beat the throw from short to first allowing Hill to tally the opening run.
Evansville would square things up at one on a Devin Williams sacrifice fly in the second before scoring three unearned runs in the fifth as a two-out Niner error kept the inning alive for the Purple Aces. After Jarod Perry reached on the error at third, Josh Jyawook would double to right-center scoring the Evansville right fielder for a 2-1 lead. Jake Mahon would trade places with Jyawook two pitches later before Kyle Pollock singled home Mahon to end the three-run frame.
Charlotte would respond by getting one of those runs back in the fifth, but would leave the bases loaded squandering a bigger inning. Jordan Hudson would triple to deep right-center to begin the inning while Derek Gallello and Logan Sherer walked to load the bases with one out. Roberts would crush a long single that short-hopped the wall as Hudson scored for a 4-2 game. Roberts’ fly ball was nearly tracked down by Perry which forced the Niners to settle for the long single.
Evansville’s Brent Jurceka (2-1) picked up the win in relief tossing 2.2 innings allowing one hit with a pair of strikeouts. Sam Johns (7) would record the save after tossing the eighth and ninth adding a walk to the same line as Jurceka.
Charlotte starter Brock Hudgens (0-4) suffered the loss after going 5.2 innings allowing one earned run on six hits with four strikeouts.
Offensively, Boomer Synek was the only Purple Ace to put together a pair of hits in four at-bats. Hudson and Roberts would both register two-hit afternoons while Roberts drove in the two Niner runs.
Charlotte will now embark on its longest road trip of the season starting on Wednesday night at Winthrop. The 6:00 p.m. rematch with the Eagles in Rock Hill will kick off the first of five-straight away from Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium.
