CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A regular season-ending three-match homestand for the Charlotte women’s tennis team started Friday with a 6-1 triumph over cross-county foe Davidson at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. The 49ers used a depleted Wildcats roster to their advantage in picking up the win and extending their win streak in the series to four.
“It was a great start to our three-match homestand,” head coach
Michaela Gorman said after her squad improved to 6-1 at the on-campus facility this spring. “Everybody played well and fought hard to help us get this victory.”
The afternoon opened with Charlotte needing only one doubles victory after Davidson (6-15) forfeited the No. 3 contest, giving freshman
Briana Bodner and sophomore
Jessica Pérez the win by default. The Niners went on to clinch the point with an 8-1 triumph in the No. 2 slot, as freshmen
Victoria Pahlett and
Macy Vonderschmidt knocking off Nisha Crouser and Tamara Hill.
The momentum carried into singles play, as each of the 49ers’ wins was earned in straight sets. Pérez made quick work of Blake Nickles in the No. 5 meeting, dispatching her opponent 6-0, 6-0, and moving the Charlotte (6-11) advantage to 3-0. Singles play had started with a Bodner default victory on the No. 6 court, automatically putting the Niners ahead by a pair.
Junior
Lisa Grosselius then clinched the match with her No. 2 singles triumph over Elaina Cummer 6-2, 6-4, moving the Charlotte further into the lead with a solid four-point cushion at that point.
Classmate
Natsuko Takayanagi followed suit shortly thereafter with her 6-0, 6-2 handling of Hill in the No. 4 position, helping the 49ers built their advantage to 5-0.
The Wildcats made an attempt at putting a dent into Charlotte’s lead with a win at No. 1, but Vonderschmidt turned back Crouser 6-4, 7-6 (2) in the No. 3 slot to seal the dominating victory.
The 49ers will return to the courts when they play host to North Carolina Central at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the second of three-straight matches on their home courts.
