CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte women’s tennis will be looking to extend its current dominance at home, though not at its typical place, with a Conference USA match at 6 p.m. Friday, playing host to Middle Tennessee at the Charlotte Indoor Tennis Club. Due to potential inclement weather in the area throughout the day, the two teams agreed to move the match indoors to give them the best chance at playing.
The Niners bring a 5-9 overall record into Friday’s meeting after picking up a 4-3 triumph over Western Carolina Saturday at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. Charlotte captured the doubles point and then split the six singles matches to improve its overall home mark to 5-1 this spring, including four-in-a-row, all at the on-campus facility.
The 49ers are 0-1 in Conference USA action, dropping a road decision to UAB March 15. The league does not play a regular-season schedule but Charlotte will welcome the Blue Raiders to town Friday in the first home conference match of the campaign. The Niners also play host to East Carolina later in the season.
Freshman Macy Vonderschmidt was tabbed the Conference USA Athlete of the Week after extending her singles win streak to six last week with triumphs against her opponents from Campbell and Western Carolina. She is the first weekly honor recipient for the program in two years, dating back to when it competed in the Atlantic 10.
The 49ers rookie recent surge has propelled her into the team lead with seven dual match victories, edging out junior Lisa Grosselius’ half dozen. Overall, including the fall, Grosselius tops the pack with eight, just ahead of Vonderschmidt and junior Natsuko Takayanagi.
Vonderschmidt is also one-half of Charlotte’s winningest doubles tandem, playing with sophomore Jessica Pérez to earn three wins. The balanced doubles lineup features seven other pairs with at least one triumph.
Middle Tennessee is 7-6 in dual matches with a 2-1 ledger against C-USA foes, having picked up victories over UAB and Florida Atlantic, both on the road. The Blue Raiders are coming off a 5-2 setback to Troy Sunday in their home finale.
Third-year head coach Shelley Godwin’s squad boasts five players with double-digit singles victories, including the fall tournament campaign, though only junior transfer Tiffany William has reached the plateau this spring. Irina Constantinide and Nayara Moraes will reach the mark with their next win.
The two teams have met only once previously, a MT victory in 1993 in neutral-site action at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
The Charlotte Indoor Tennis Club is located at 8401 Sharon Lakes Road and features six indoor courts.
The Niners also will not play their Sunday morning match, which was scheduled on campus against Coastal Carolina.
