FORT COLLINS, Colo. –
Charlotte women’s basketball has made the postseason for the 12th
-straight year, extending an impressive and elite streak, when it was announced as one of 64 participants in the Women’s NIT Monday evening. The 49ers will open tournament action with a familiar foe from their Atlantic 10 era, St. Bonaventure, Friday at a time to be announced in St. Bonaventure, N.Y.
“We are excited about earning a bid and having the opportunity to extend our season and our postseason streak to 12-straight seasons,” head coach Cara Consuegra
said, “St. Bonaventure is a quality opponent, one we’re very familiar with, and we’ll need to come prepared for a solid matchup, especially on the road where it has played well this year.”
Charlotte is one of only 12 schools nationally to reach the postseason in each of the last 12 years, dating back to 2002-03. The Niners have now made the WNIT in 10 of those seasons.
The 49ers enter the postseason with a 15-15 record after falling 64-55 Wednesday in their lone Conference USA Championships contest, to Louisiana Tech in El Paso, Texas. Charlotte had closed the regular season by winning three of its last four to earn the league’s No. 6 seed in the tournament.
The Niners have also matched their longest consecutive run as a WNIT participant of five-straight years, equaling the stretch from 2004-08. Charlotte owns a 10-9 all-time record in the WNIT, raising the mark to 12-10 when the event was previously called the National Women’s Invitation Tournament (NWIT).
Last season, the 49ers reached the WNIT Sweet 16 by winning their first two games (Appalachian State and Davidson) before falling by two to Florida in the third round. All three contests were played on the Halton Arena floor.
Charlotte’s most successful run in the WNIT came in 2011 when it appeared in the semifinals, capturing four-straight victories before losing at Toledo. The Niners are 2-2 under Consuegra in the WNIT.
St. Bonaventure completed its campaign with a run to the Atlantic 10 Tournament semifinals before falling to Fordham. The Bonnies are 23-10 overall, including a 12-1 home record inside the Reilly Center. They have won nine straight on their home floor since dropping a non-conference meeting with Toledo in mid-December.
Charlotte won last year’s meeting in St. Bonaventure, 64-57, Jan. 30, 2013, to close the gap in the all-time series. The Bonnies still hold a 5-4 edge and the teams have split the four previous contests played inside the Reilly Center.
Charlotte is 1-1 against SBU under Consuegra with the seven-point victory last year the largest for either team in the two matchups.
More information regarding game time and ticket information will be announced as soon as it’s available.
