CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Postponed by bad weather on Tuesday, the Charlotte 49ers baseball team will take the field once again on Wednesday afternoon hosting UNC Asheville at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday’s contest is one of three ballgames added to the 2014 slate after opening weekend with Youngstown State and Virginia Tech were snowed out.
The Niners come into Wednesday’s action after a 5-5 tie after 10 innings with Creighton on Sunday. It marked just the sixth time in school-history a game had no winner and loser outcome and was just the eighth time happening in Conference USA history.
Des Roberts started a three-run, bottom of the first with a two-run double to left before Logan Sherer followed with a RBI single to right. A balk and run-scoring single by Brad Elwood in the second would account for Charlotte’s five runs.
Creighton had the lead man in the eighth and tenth with leadoff doubles, but both Blue Jays would be stranded to end the inning. In the 10th with Joey Mancuso at third and one out, Creighton would try to score the go-ahead run as a fly ball to left off the bat of Fitzgerald saw Mancuso tag at third. Elwood’s throw in left was right on the money as Mancuso was tagged out at the plate by Lang to retire the side.
Wednesday will mark the final non-conference tune-up before Conference USA play opens up this weekend at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium against #21 FIU. Wednesday will also be the first of two meetings between the two squads in 2014. UNC Asheville will make a return trip in two weeks for a 6:00 p.m. matchup under the lights at Hayes Stadium on Wednesday, March 26th.
UNC Asheville entered Tuesday’s home game against N.C. Central on a seven-game losing streak after starting the season with a 7-4 win over UNC Greensboro. The Bulldogs are coming off of a weekend sweep at the hands of Eastern Kentucky. The Colonels swept through Asheville with victories of 3-1, 5-2 and 11-4.
Charlotte will send right-hander Corbin Shive to the mound for his second start of the season. Shive took the tough-luck loss last Tuesday in a 5-2 loss at the College of Charleston. Shive tossed the first four innings allowing five runs, only one earned, on four hits with a strikeout.
Ø > Charlotte has played four extra-inning ballgames through nine games of 2014, just two shy from tying a school-record of six. The Diamond Niners in 2005, 2007 and 2008 each played six sessions of free baseball. Charlotte has now played 92 extra-inning ballgames in school-history with an overall record of 44-47-1 in those matchups.
Ø > Four hit streaks will be on the line Wednesday starting with Brett Lang’s team-best nine game streak. Lang’s streak actually stands at 12 going back to the final three games of 2013. Brad Elwood (7), T.J. Nichting (6) and Mikal Hill (4) have the others in-progress.
