IRVING, Texas –
Charlotte senior point guard Ny Hammonds
has collected her first Conference USA Player of the Week honor, as the league office announced her selection March 3. The honor is the first for the 49ers this season.
Hammonds compiled one of the most prolific weeks in NCAA history leading the Niners to victories over Marshall Feb. 26 and Marshall March 1 to conclude the home portion of the regular season.
She became only the sixth player in NCAA history, and the first in the league’s history dating back to 1995-96, to record back-to-back triple-doubles. She joined Patricia Walker as the only two Charlotte players to post a triple-double in program history and then rose to the top of the school record books by adding another.
The Concord, N.C., native started with a 10-point, career-high 11 rebound and career-best 14-assist performance against FIU Wednesday. She reached the milestone after being honored pregame for recently becoming the 49ers’ all-time assists leader.
The 14 assists against the Panthers mark the highest of any of the national triple-doubles this season. It was the 15th
overall triple-double in Conference USA history and the ninth in a league contest. The 14 assists tie her for second in conference history for league games and place her in a deadlock for third in the league’s annals for overall contests. They also move her into fifth on the school’s single-game chart as the most since Maria Byars handed out 15 against Western Carolina Jan. 13, 1983.
Hammonds then poured in 12 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out 11 assists in her final home game Saturday against Marshall. She is the only player in conference history with multiple triple-doubles in league games and one of only two, joining Louisville’s Sara Nord, to play in Conference USA to accomplish the feat.
Hammonds’ second triple-double puts her in an elite group of four players nationally with multiple triple-doubles this year and as one of only 41 in NCAA history to do so during one season, dating back to the organization’s records which began tracking the statistic in 1985-86.
She became the 19th
different player to post a triple-double in 2013-14 on the national list and helped raise the cumulative total, now among 22 individuals, to 29 across the country through Sunday’s games.
In addition to her Conference USA Player of the Week nod from the league office, Hammonds garnered an identical honor from College Sports Madness Monday. She was also selected as CSM’s High-Major National Player of the Week. The complete CSM listings can be found here
ESPN.com’s Graham Hays also mentioned her in his “She Also Starred” column as part of his Weekend Wrap, which can be found here
For the week, Hammonds averaged 11.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 12.5 assists as the 49ers clinched an opening-round bye in the upcoming Conference USA Championships, March 11-15 in El Paso, Texas. Charlotte will not play until the tournament’s second day, March 12, against an opponent and at a time to be determined.
Hammonds has also pushed her school’s career assists record to 483 through Saturday’s win, providing a separation of 41 between her and second-place Markita Aldridge (1992,’94-96).
The Niners close their regular season with two road games this week, starting at 8 p.m. EST Wednesday in Tulsa, Okla., against Tulsa. Charlotte then will travel to Birmingham, Ala., for a 3 p.m. EST Friday matchup with UAB in a rescheduled contest from late January.
