The Charlotte 49ers (14-13, Conference USA: 5-9) play Old Dominion (14-15, C-USA: 8-6) in Halton Arena in their final home game, Sunday, March 2 at 4 pm. Prior to the game, the 49ers will honor their lone senior Ben Cherry. The game will also be broadcast in the Charlotte area on WCCB Charlotte.
Last time out, Charlotte lost to East Carolina on the road, 75-68, Thursday, February 27. The 49ers were trailing by 19 points halfway through the first half. The 49ers rallied to tie the game at 50 with 8:44 left in the second half. The game was tied several times over the final six minutes, however, East Carolina with a couple of timely threes and making free throws done the stretch held off the 49ers. The 49ers finished the game with a 34-14 advantage on points in the paint. Pierria Henry scored 20 points with 16 of those points coming in the second half. Denzel Ingram and Terrence Williams each scored 11 points.
Shawn Lester leads the team in scoring at 12.6 points per game. Lester has recorded 18 double-figure scoring games off the bench this season. Henry is the only player in Conference USA and among a handful of players in the nation that average double-figure points (12.3 ppg) while averaging five rebounds (5.1 rpg) and five assists (5.92 apg) per game. Willie Clayton (10.8 ppg) and Williams (10.7 ppg) round out the double-figure scorers. Clayton ranks second in Conference USA in rebounds (8.8 rpg). Clayton leads Conference USA in offensive rebounds at 3.70 per game. Mike Thorne averages 9.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Ingram averages 7.5 points per game. Cherry averages 6.3 points per game. Cherry is second in Conference USA in three-point field goal percentage (46.7%). Clayton is third in Conference USA in field goal percentage (59.0%). Marcus Bryan scored six points off the bench at East Carolina.
Old Dominion has three double-figure scorers led by Aaron Bacote, who averages 16.4 points per game. Dimitri Batten averages 10.8 points per game. Keenan Palmore averages 10.4 points per game. Richard Ross averages 9.6 points and a team-leading 7.4 rebounds per game.
Sunday’s game will mark the 28th meeting between Charlotte and Old Dominion, who leads the series 15-12. Charlotte has an 8-5 series advantage when the two teams play in Charlotte. Old Dominion defeated Charlotte, 81-48, in their last meeting which came in Norfolk, Virginia, December 23, 2009. Old Dominion defeated the 49ers, 69-68, in their last game in Halton Arena, November 16, 2008.
