The Charlotte 49ers (14-12, Conference USA: 5-7) play East Carolina (15-13, C-USA: 4-9) on the road, Thursday, February 27 at 7 pm. The game will be broadcast nationally on Fox Sports 1.
The last time out, Charlotte narrowly lost to UAB, 64-62, in Halton Arena last Saturday. Pierria Henry led the 49ers with 16 points, Terrence Williams added 14 points. Shawn Lester scored 12 points off the bench. Mike Thorne grabbed 10 rebounds in the game.
Lester leads the team in scoring at 12.8 points per game. Lester has recorded 18 double-figure scoring games off the bench this season. Henry is the only player in Conference USA and among a handful of players in the nation that average double-figure points (12.0 ppg) while averaging five rebounds (5.1 rpg) and five assists (6.0 apg) per game. Willie Clayton (11.0 ppg) and Williams (10.7 ppg) round out the double-figure scorers. Clayton ranks fourth in Conference USA in rebounds (8.8 rpg). Thorne averages 9.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Denzel Ingram averages 7.3 points per game. Ben Cherry averages 6.3 points per game. Cherry is second in Conference USA in three-point field goal percentage (47.7%). Clayton is second in Conference USA in field goal percentage (59.9%). Marcus Bryan scored four points and grabbed three rebounds off the bench against UAB last Saturday.
East Carolina enters the game having won two straight. Akeem Richmond leads East Carolina in scoring at 18.1 points per game. Paris Campbell averages 12.5 points and Caleb White rounds out East Carolina’s double-figure scorers at 12.4 points per game. Brandan Stith leads East Carolina in rebounding at 6.9 boards per game.
Thursday’s game will mark the 22nd meeting between Charlotte and East Carolina. The 49ers lead the all-time series, 15-6. Charlotte has won six of the ten meetings between the two teams in Greenville. Charlotte defeated East Carolina, 76-64, in their last meeting in Greenville, December 3, 2011. In their last meeting, Charlotte defeated East Carolina, 76-64, in Halton Arena, December 1, 2012. Chris Braswell led the 49ers with 18 points in that game. Clayton scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Williams scored 11 points in that game.
