Charlotte, N.C. – Three 49ers scored in double-figures, however, Charlotte (14-12, C-USA: 5-8) suffered a narrow 64-62 defeat to UAB (17-10, C-USA: 6-7), in Halton Arena. The 49ers held their annual men's basketball alumni game prior to the Charlotte-UAB game. Charlotte recognized former 49ers men's basketball players and managers in attendance at halftime of the Charlotte-UAB game.
“First off, congrats to Coach Haase,” Charlotte coach Alan Major said. “He’s doing a terrific job with his team. It was one of those tit-for-tat games where it comes down to the last possession. I’m proud of our guys’ effort, I thought we played harder than we have here recently, and that’s a positive. I think the lesson now for us is to continue to grind away at little things. It’s a great lesson, but a hard lesson to learn. But this time of year, it’s about little things. That’s just an area we have to continue to grasp and get better at.”
Pierria Henry led the 49ers with 16 points for his 18th double-figure scoring game of the season and the 44th of his career. Terrence Williams scored 14 points for his 14th double-figure scoring game of the season and the 25th of his career. Shawn Lester scored 12 points off the bench for his 18th double-figure scoring game off the bench this season. Denzel Ingram scored eight points. Mike Thorne recorded his fifth double-figure rebounds game of the season with 10 boards.
The 49ers began the game with consecutive threes by Williams and Ingram. Charlotte maintained the first half lead until UAB’s Chad Washington knocked down a three from the top of the key giving UAB an 18-17 lead with 9:28 on the clock.
UAB had a lead of 1-4 points for the next seven minutes until Lester knocked down a three tying the score at 31 with 3:20 on the clock. UAB regained the lead just forty seconds later. The 49ers took a 35-34 lead when Henry scored on a short jumper with 1:38 on the clock. Henry scored inside at the first half buzzer tying the score at 38 at the half.
The lead exchanged hands several times with several ties over the first nine minutes of the second half. Lester connected on a jump shot and Thorne scored inside giving the 49ers a 55-52 lead with 8:55 on the clock.
UAB scored the next six points taking a 58-55 lead with 4:40 on the clock.
With 41 seconds on the clock, Henry knocked down a three from the wing tying the score at 62. Then, UAB’s Fahro Alihodzic’s tip-in with 14 seconds on the clock gave UAB a 64-62 lead. Henry had the ball stolen by UAB’s Chad Frazier in the closing seconds ending the game.
Charlotte returns to action when they play in-state foe East Carolina on the road in a game that will broadcast on Fox Sports 1, Thursday, February 27 at 7 pm.
