Blacksburg, Va.- The Charlotte 49ers track and field team has an impressive showing in day one of action at the Virginia Tech Challenge on Friday afternoon.
T'Sheila Mungo started off the meet shattering the school record in the 600m (1:30.74). Mungo sat in third place on the Charlotte all-time list in the event heading into the Virginia Tech Challenge. Mungo leaped into first placing distancing herself by nearly five seconds. Shanice Jones held the record since 2011 running a 1:35.62, 600m.
Carolina Casin-Silva finished ninth in the 600m running a personal best 1:38.19 putting her into fifth all-time in the event. Rachel Miller finished tenth behind Casin-Silva having a performance of 1:38.34. Tianna McHenry placed 13th running a personal best 1:38.96.
Michael Tamayo posted a school record in the men's 600m running the event in 1:19.57, beating the school record by two second. Teammate Carl Walton finished in fifth behind Tamayo in the event having a 1:22.24 performance. Walton's performance puts him in fifth on the Charlotte all-time list. Kent Man improved his personal best in the event running a 1:23.00, 600m.
Alvonna Blakney qualified in the 60m hurdles finishing with the fourth fastest time of 8.629. Blakney finished in sixth place in the finals running a 8.71.
Joann Blakney led the way for the Niners in the 60m dash with a 7.48 performance in the prelims. J. Blakney qaulified with the top time. Briauna Jones finished with a personal best performance in the 60m dash having a time of 7.52. Jones finished second in the prelims. Sarah Justice posted the sixth fastest time in the prelims with a 7.65 60m dash. Michelle Whitaker missed out of the finals finishing ninth with a performance of 7.81.
J. Blakney posted the top time in the finals (7.42) with Jones (7.65) finishing third and Justice (7.741) placing sixth overall.
Anthony Bynum qualified in the 60m dash for the men's with the second fastest time of 6.92. Bynum did not compete in the finals.
J.Blakney tied her personal best in the 200m finishing with the top time of 24.21. A. Blakney finished in seventh with a 25.13 200m. Sarah Justice finished in ninth with a 25.186 performance.
Chris Tate posted the top time for the Niners in the 200m placing third with a performance of 21.53. Tate's performance moves him into fifth on the Charlotte all-time list. John Osborne finished right behind Tate with a time of 21.68 moving him up to seventh all-time.
Anthony Campbell placed third in the men's triple jump clearing 15.17m (49'9.25) in his only successful attempt. Campbell finished as the top collegiate finisher.
In the men's weight throw, Kerrick Williams set a new personal best with a 17.23m (56'6.5) performance and claiming the top spot in the event.
After setting the school record in the women's weight throw earlier this season, Katrina Wright improved upon that mark clearing 17.43m (57'2.25) in her second throw. Wright finished in second in the event.
Charlotte will continue in day two of the Virginia Tech Challenge on Saturday afternoon starting with the women's 800m at 1 pm.
