A week later than originally scheduled, the Charlotte 49ers baseball team will open up its home portion of the 2014 schedule hosting Canisius (2-1) in the first of a three-game weekend series on Friday afternoon at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. The opener Friday will begin at 4:00 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday matinees beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Redshirt junior Ryan Butler will make his first appearance in a little over two years after going 0-1 with a 5.87 ERA in 2011 with Marshall, missing 2012 and 2013 due to injury. Butler made three starts along with four relief appearances for the Thundering Herd, playing on the same 2011 team with current 49er Hunter May. Butler recorded 10 strikeouts while walking six in his 15.1 innings of work. The Charlotte native and product of Ardrey Kell High School sat out during his time at Northwest Florida State before transferring to Charlotte. Butler was drafted in the 16th Round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees before opting to join the Niners.

Charlotte comes into the weekend set after a 4-3, 11-inning setback in their season-opener at High Point on Tuesday. Freshman Zach Jarrett (Hickory, N.C.) had a spectacular debut picking up a double and three singles in his first four plate appearances before rounding out his night 4-for-6 adding a RBI. Canisius enters the series with a 2-1 mark after splitting a two-game at #5 N.C. State earlier in the week. The Griffs shutout the Wolfpack in their season-opener 3-0 Sunday using a strong seven-inning performance from starter Rohn Pierce.

The two teams will meet for just the second time in program history as Charlotte picked up a three-game opening weekend sweep back in 2006. The two had another series scheduled in 2009 but inclement weather cancelled the entire weekend.
