The Charlotte 49ers (14-9, Conference USA: 5-5) begin a three-game home stand when they play Conference USA foe Marshall (8-17, C-USA: 2-8) in Halton Arena, Saturday, February 15 at 7 pm. This game will mark the first of two meetings between the two teams as the 49ers play Marshall on the road in their final regular-season game, Thursday, March 6.
The last time out, Charlotte lost on the road at Southern Miss, 81-64, last Sunday. Shawn Lester led the 49ers with 20 points. Willie Clayton recorded his 22nd straight double-figure scoring game with 10 points. Pierria Henry scored 11 points. Charlotte cut a 21-point Southern Miss second half lead to 10 points when Henry knocked down a three with 3:33 left in the second half.
Shawn Lester leads the team in scoring at 13.1 points per game. Pierria Henry averages double-figure points (12.2 ppg) while averaging nearly five rebounds (4.9 rpg) and five assists (6.05 apg) per game. Henry ranks third in Conference USA in assists. Clayton (11.9 ppg) and Terrence Williams (10.4 ppg) round out the double-figure scorers. Mike Thorne averages 9.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Denzel Ingram averages 7.7 points per game. Ben Cherry averages 7.0 points per game. Clayton leads Conference USA in offensive rebounds (3.95 per game). Cherry leads Conference USA in three-point field goal percentage (50.0%). Ingram is fourth in Conference USA in three-point field goal percentage (41.9%). Clayton leads Conference USA in field goal percentage (62.3%). Marcus Bryan has given the 49ers solid production off the bench this season so far. Bryan grabbed seven rebounds in the 49ers road win at UTEP, January 9.
Marshall enters the game having lost four of their last five games. Kareem Canty leads three Marshall players in double-figures at 16 points per game. Canty is second in Conference USA in assist per game at 6.08. Ryan Taylor averages 13.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Chris Thomas averages 12.1 points per game.
Saturday’s game will mark the seventh meeting Charlotte and Marshall, who leads the all-time series, 4-2. The 49ers have won the last two meetings between the two teams. Charlotte defeated Marshall, 82-71, at home in their last meeting, February 11, 1978.
