Irving, Texas- Rice has been tabbed to claim its sixth Conference USA Baseball title in nine years this spring, according to a vote of the league’s 13 coaches. League newcomer Florida Atlantic was picked to finish second, while East Carolina expected to finish third.

The Owls, who captured the 2006-2013 Conference USA regular season titles, grabbed 12 of the possible 13 first place coach’s votes. Tulane grabbed the other first place vote, expected to finish fifth.  Rice finished the season with a 44-20 overall record and 15-9 in conference play.  The Owls advanced to the Raleigh Super Regional after advancing through the Eugene Regional.

The Conference USA features seven new programs to add to a healthy baseball conference that ranked tenth in RPI polls among the nation’s conferences last season.

The 2014 Conference USA Championship will feature the top eight finishers in regular-season league play. Those eight teams will see a return to the double-elimination format that the conference employed from 1996-2009. Southern Miss will host the C-USA tournament for the fourth time in the conference history.  The tournament will be held May 21-25 with the championship game taking place on Sunday, May 25, and will be televised by CBS Sports Network.
