Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer standout forward Giuseppe Gentile, who has turned pro after his junior season, was selected by the Chicago Fire in today’s Major League Soccer’s Waiver Draft.

In his career, Gentile played an integral role in helping the 49ers earn three NCAA Tournament bids including a trip to the 2011 College Cup Final as well as capturing the 2012 Atlantic 10 regular-season title and the 2013 Conference USA Tournament title.

This season, Gentile earned first-team NSCAA All-South Region honors. Gentile, who also earned Conference USA Tournament Offensive MVP and All-Conference USA First-Team honors, finished second on the team with eight goals.  Four of his eight goals were game winners.  Gentile scored two goals in the opening round victory of the C-USA Tournament against UAB, 2-1.

Gentile finished his career tied for tenth in school history with 27 career goals.  He also recorded 12 career assists to finish his Charlotte career tied for 11th in school history with 66 career points. As a sophomore, he earned first-team NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors as well as second-team All-Atlantic 10 honors. As a sophomore, he also earned first-team CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District honors. In 2011, he was named  Soccer America National Freshman of the Year and Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. He also was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team and Second-Team All-Atlantic 10. Gentile was also named College Soccer News Freshman All-American and to the College Cup All-Tournament Team after scoring three goals with an assist in the 2011 NCAA Tournament.  He also earned numerous National Team of the Week and League Player and Rookie of the Week honors in his career.

Former 49ers standouts Jon Busch and Donnie Smith are currently playing in the MLS.
