Charlotte, N.C.-  For the third time in as many seasons Charlotte makes the postseason.  The 49ers take on the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina for the second time this season and first time in the postseason.

Nationally seeded Charlotte will take on Coastal Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament at 7 pm at Transamerica Field in front of the 12th ranked fans in the nation.

Charlotte grabbed the number 13 national seed during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday.  It was the second time in program history that the 49ers received a national seed.  In 1994, the Niners were the #4 seed.  At that time there was only four national seeds received.  This is the first time in program history that the 49ers received a national seed since the NCAA expanded the field to 48 teams and 16 national seeds.  “It is a wonderful reward for how the guys have played all season,” said Coach Kevin Langan.

Charlotte makes the postseason for the ninth time in program history and four times in the past five seasons.  For the 49er senior class: Klay Davis, Thomas Allen, Will Mayhew, Tyler Gibson, Aidan Kirkbride and Anthony Perez have made the postseason three consecutive seasons.  The senior class is one of the most decorated classes in program history. Charlotte has won two Atlantic 10 Championships (2010 and 2011), a Conference USA Tournament Championship (2013), a NCAA College Cup Finalist (2011) and has won 56 matches to date.

Charlotte defeated Coastal Carolina on September 6 in Conway, S.C. 2-1.  Giuseppe Gentile and Aidan Kirkbride scored for the Niners to seal the win.  Brandt Bronico, David Mayer and Monbo Bokar picked up assists in the win.  “We are super excited to be hosting a team like Coastal Carolina.  The seed is great but when the whistle blows and the ball starts bouncing around you throw the seeds out the window.  Coastal is a fantastic team, high scoring offense.  It will be a great battle between two good teams and a great night for college soccer.”

The series between the two programs are tied 4-4-1.  The first meeting between these programs came October 9, 1980. The 49ers lost the first meeting 4-0 at home. The 49ers would rebound the following year and win 3-2 on the road. The Chanticleers would win the next match 5-3 during the Campbell Camel Classic in 1989. The lone tie of the series came October 30, 1991 with a 2-2 tie in Charlotte. Charlotte dropped the following match in Conway S.C. 3-1 in 1992. Coastal Carolina would win in 2008 2-1 in overtime. The 49ers defeated the Chanticleers in 2011 and 2012 2-1 and 1-0 respectively.

This is the first ever meeting between the two programs in postseason play. Coastal Carolina comes into the match (18-4) on the season after defeating ETSU 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  Charlotte comes into the match having a couple days to rest up with a 12-5-3 record.
