Charlotte, N.C.- Make it five straight for the Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer team with a 3-0 shutout against conference foe FIU on Friday night.
Charlotte jumped on the board quick scoring two goals in the first 20 minutes of the match. Senior midfielder Aidan Kirkbride found the back of the net in the first eight minutes for his fourth goal of the season. Senior Tyler Gibson assisted on the goal with a short pass to Kirkbride inside the box.
Less than three minutes later Charlotte found the back of the net again. This time coming from sophomore forward Kyle Parker. Parker found the back of the net off the pass from Gibson, sliding the ball across the box. Gibson picked up his second assist of the night and fourth of the season. "Kyle was just alive in the box for two balls that found the back of the net," said Coach Kevin Langan.
Parker found the back of the net again; late in the first halfripped a shot off the keeper and ricocheted to the feet of Parker and sliding it into the back of the net for his second of the contest.
Parker has found the back of the net in four straight matches. The 49er forward has scored twice in three matches this season and seven over the last four matches and eleventh of the season.
"I thought our first half performance was incredible. It was the best soccer we have played all season."
Charlotte took its foot of the accelerator in the second half taking only two shots as the 49ers coasted to a 3-0 win. "The game got a bit chippy with some fouls. I am proud of our guys with the way they kept their discipline."
Red-shirt senior net-minder Klay Davis and the rest of the 49ers defense picked up its ninth shutout of the season and seventh solo shutout of the season. With the win tonight, Davis moves into a tie for second all-time in wins as a keeper.
"We are really playing some of our best soccer heading into the post-season. Earlier in the season our results were not showing how we had played. But we stuck together and are getting the results we deserve."
Charlotte heads into the Conference USA tournament at Transamerica Field on Wednesday, November 13 against either UAB or South Carolina depending on tomorrow’s match-up against South Carolina and Old Dominion.
