Charlotte, N.C.- Goals are coming at a high rate for the 49ers during their four game winning streak with a 3-0 win over C-USA foe Marshall on Saturday night. Charlotte moves to 8-5-3 (3-3-2 C-USA) while Marshall fell to 2-10-6 and winless in C-USA play. “The most important thing is that we got the win,” said Aidan Kirkbride.
Charlotte started the festivities for seven seniors: Thomas Allen, Klay Davis, Tyler Gibson, Chase Johnston, Aidan Kirkbride, Will Mayhew and Anthony Perez. The crowd was not able to settle in before Brandt Bronico found the back of the net off the cross from Anthony Perez just 1:49 into the match. The Niners move to 21-4-3 under Coach Kevin Langan when the 49ers score first. Charlotte went into the half up 1-0. “This is an incredible group of seniors,” said Coach Kevin Langan.
Charlotte dominated the point of attack from the first whistle. “It was a great game. They (Marshall) really pressed us hard at the beginning. They worked hard they hustled.” The 49ers outshot the Thundering Herd 19-11 and 13-6 in the first half. Charlotte came out of the locker room with more tenacity tacking on two more goals in the second half. Kyle Parker took a deflection off a Marshall defender near the top of the box and found the back of the net for his team leading ninth goal. The Thundering Herd’s keeper crashed towards the top of the box and Parker sent a volley over the keepers head for a commanding 2-0 lead in the 49th minute. “That goal settled us down early in the second half.”
Charlotte found the back of the net for their third goal in the 63rd minute when David Mayer took a shot off from the right side of the box. Mayer’s shot ricocheted off the keeper and fell at the feet of Hans Honer, who put it in the back of the net with a sliding effort. Honer’s goal was the first of his career.
Red-shirt senior net minder Klay Davis picked up his sixth solo shut-out and eighth as a team. Davis tallied four saves. Charlotte is 15-0-3 under Langan when the 49ers shut-out their opponent. “It was a great way to end the regular season at home,” said Klay Davis.
Charlotte has allowed one goal during this four game win streak. “I think we are peaking at the right time of the season. We were giving up goals earlier in the season that should not have happened,” said Tyler Gibson. The 49ers are outscoring their opponents 13-1 during that streak and 29-14 this season. “I don’t think you will find a more experienced group of seniors anywhere in the country. The seniors combined have played over 430 matches.”
Charlotte heads to FIU on Friday, November 8 before coming home to host the Conference USA men’s soccer tournament. The 49ers are sitting in a three way tie for fifth in the standings.
