Denton, Texas- The Charlotte 49ers men’s and women’s cross country debut in the Conference USA showed promise. The women’s squad finished fifth as a team, while the men’s team finished sixth as a team.
Elinor Kirk from UAB took home the individual top time for the women’s, while Anthony Rotich from UTEP took home the individual top time for the men’s. Rotich was the defending C-USA Champion. Charlotte’s Maraya Slatter picked up the only C-USA All-Conference honors placing 19th overall in the women’s race.
Tulsa men’s and women’s squads swept the Conference USA team titles. Nationally ranked Tulsa’s men have won their fourth consecutive C-USA cross country title. UTSA tied Tulsa women’s squad with 67 points apiece. Charlotte women’s finished fifth overall out of 15 squads behind Tulsa, UTSA, North Texas, and East Carolina. Charlotte was three points away from a fourth place finish. Charlotte men’s placed sixth overall out of 13 squads behind Tulsa, North Texas, Rice, UTEP, and Middle Tennessee. “We had a solid first Conference USA showing,” said Coach Ed Schlichter.
Charlotte’s Joseph Cotto placed first for the 49ers picking up a 24th place finish, missing the All-Conference honors by three spots. Ben Sterett finished 32nd, followed by Zach Greth and Ross Roberson in 35th and 36th respectively.
Charlotte’s Maraya Slatter finished first for the Niners placing 19th overall. “We are very excited for Maraya Slatter getting her first All-Conference performance.” Kim Spano placed 25th followed by Morgan Richards in 27th missing the conference honors as well. Kristen Stout placed 40th along with Carolina Casin-Silva and Taylor Carcella placing 44th and 45th respectively. ”They fought hard in the middle.”
“We had a bunch of season and personal bests on both sides. We didn’t execute like we should have, but we ran well. We need to make a couple of minor changes moving forward to have a great showing at the Southeast regional meet.”
Charlotte takes next week off the prepare for the NCAA Southeast regional hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. November 15.
