Junior Raoul Menard (Ange-Gardien, Quebec / Beaulieu) eagled the par-five 16th hole and posted his second-straight one-under 70, but the Charlotte 49ers went four-over par for the day and fell back to a tie for eighth at the SCVB Pacific Invitational Friday in Stockton Calif. The event is a three-day, 54-hole tournament at the Stockton Golf & Country Club, a par-71, 6,511-yard layout.
Menard’s four birdies led the team, to go with five bogeys and the late eagle for his 71 and his two-under score (70-70 – 140) so far to put him in a tie for tenth in the field heading to tomorrow’s final round. The eagle was the third for a 49er in competition this season.
Senior Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga. / LSU), who was tied with Menard after the first round, went one-over on Friday to sit at even par (70-72 – 142) to the third round. He birdied the first two holes in the morning, before slowly gong over par with three bogeys in his next 10 holes. He managed a birdie on the 13th before finishing the round with a bogey on the 18th hole for the 72. He is currently tied for 18th overall on the leaderboard.
Charlotte is tied with Denver for ninth in the 12-team event.
“It was a day that only three teams shot over par and we were one of those teams, unfortunately,” said Charlotte head coach Ryan Cabbage. “When you have a bunched-up leaderboard as we had after the first round, a day this like will move you back a little.”
Sophomore Thomas Rowland (Consett, England / St. Bedes Catholic School & Sixth Form College) and freshman Seth Gandy (Huntersville, N.C. / Hough HS) both shot two-over for the day, resulting in the four-over score for the team. Rowland had three bogeys and a birdie on the front nine, before two more bogeys and two birdies for an even-par back nine. Gandy had a double-bogey in his opening hole and a bogey on the third hole, but rallied back a little with three birdies two bogeys in the final 15 holes for the 73. Gandy is tied for 29th after an opening round 72 (72-73 – 145), while Rowland is tied for 38th with a pair of rounds of 73.
Sophomore Daniel Brantley (Asheboro, N.C.) had six bogeys and a birdie for a five-over par 76. He is six-over (72-76 – 148) for the event.
“These guys will bounce back after we get some work in this afternoon. We will be ready to go for the final round tomorrow.”
The 49ers will be first off the tenth tee Saturday morning for the final round, paired with Pacific and Nevada, starting at 11 a.m. Eastern.
