CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Charlotte women’s tennis representatives, juniors Lisa Grosselius and Natsuko Takayanagi, finished opening day action Thursday at the ITA Carolinas Regional in Chapel Hill, N.C. Both players competed in the qualifying singles flight.

Grosselius advanced to the bracket’s round of 16 after moving past her round of 32 opponent, Western Carolina’s Shannon Bettiol. Bettiol won the first set and the players were tied during the second set before the Catamounts’ sophomore was forced to retire due to injury.

Grosselius then met Campbell’s Tamara Stanic, a seeded player, and dropped a hard-fought, three-set 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 decision in the round of 16 to finish her play in the tournament.

Takayanagi, also one of the eight seeded players, fell to Coastal Carolina’s Honami Yazawa in another three-set affair, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 32.

The Niners tandem will join the rest of their teammates in closing out the fall tournament campaign next weekend, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-26, by playing host to the 49er Invitational at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. Charlotte will welcome Coastal Carolina, Davidson and USC Upstate to town for the two-day event.
