CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte 49ers will hold their annual Basketball Madness on Thursday, October 24 at 9 p.m. inside Halton Arena

The second of the two tip-off events, which also included Fan Day last Saturday, is the annual 49ers Basketball Madness, held on Thursday at 9 p.m. and hosted once again this year by 49ers alum and current WACH Fox 57 Meteorologist Garrett Bedenbaugh. The night will consist of a host of entertaining activities - including some favorites with the team introductions, slam dunk contest and more.

Last season, the Charlotte 49ers men's basketball squad finished 21-12 while capturing the Great Alaska Shootout title and earning a trip to the NIT.  The 49ers return four starters and eight letterwinners and welcome seven newcomers to this year’s team. 2012 Atlantic 10 All-Defensive team selection junior guard Pierria Henry and 2012 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team selection sophomore forward Willie Clayton each started all 33 of Charlotte’s games last season. Henry ranked among the nation’s leaders in steals for the second straight year. Clayton led the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage. Junior guard Terrence Williams and sophomore guard Denzel Ingram round out the 49ers returning starters.

The 49ers begin the 2013-14 season with an exhibition game in Halton Arena against Wingate on November 2. The 49ers begin the regular-season in Halton Arena against ETSU on Friday, November 8 at 7:30 pm.

Third-year head coach Cara Consuegra has the 49ers positioned fourth in the preseason Conference USA poll, as they re-enter the league in which they made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2003.

Ny Hammonds, a point guard who broke single-season school marks for assists (209) and minutes played (1101), will be the lone senior but she is joined by solid backcourt mates, juniors Hillary Sigmon and Ayanna Holmes. Redshirt junior Gabby Tyler also returns to the court this season after missing all of last year due to injury.

A five-member recruiting class includes Parade All-American Ciara Gregory and three others from the Carolinas.

Charlotte gets its season underway Nov. 8 by playing host to Liberty before embarking on a three-game road swing including trips to Kansas State and Minnesota. The Conference USA opener will be Jan. 8 inside Halton Arena against Old Dominion, a familiar foe from the Sun Belt Conference days.
