CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
A final three-match homestand for the Charlotte women’s soccer team opens Friday night, as the 49ers will play host to UAB at 7 at Transamerica Field in an important Conference USA East Division contest. The two programs are renewing a series that started during the Niners’ first run through the league from 1995-2004.
Charlotte currently ranks second in the division race with eight points, posting a 2-2-2 league record through last weekend’s trip to Texas. The 49ers are 7-5-2 overall entering the last four regular-season matches of the campaign.
Eleven different players have contributed to a balanced scoring attack for head coach John Cullen
. The Niners have outscored their opponents 21-to-16 this fall, including a 16-to-5 edge during the second half. Junior Amanda Jones
, the Oct. 7 C-USA Offensive Player of the Week and Preseason C-USA Player to Watch, leads the squad with five goals, 12 points and 33 shots. She shares team-high honors with classmate Jessica Ryan
with two game winners.
Sophomore Maddie Kiebel
paces the squad with four assists. Overall, six different players have multiple assists with 12 contributing at least one helper.
The goalkeeping position has featured a rotating starter throughout the campaign but senior Alex Kubrick
returned to action Sunday. She has started all 10 matches in which she has played and owns three of the team’s six shutouts, posting a 0.98 goals-against average with 39 saves.
UAB is in a three-way tie for third in the East Division with seven points after registering a 2-2-1 C-USA mark to-date. The Blazers, under the direction of Harold Warren, are 9-4-1 overall after dropping a 3-2 heartbreaker to FIU at home Sunday in their only match last weekend.
Paige Hanks and Kasey Johnson guide the team with six and five goals, respectively. Hanks is tied with Sam Bradford and Amy Phillips with a team-best three assists.
Courtnie Northern and Angelica Jimenez has split time in net, with Jimenez seeing the majority of the minutes; however, Northern boasts a lower GAA at 1.09.
UAB is 5-2 in road matches this season, picking up a 1-0 victory at Marshall Sept. 29 in its last tilt away from Birmingham.
Charlotte owns a 6-1-1 record in the all-time series, garnering triumphs in each of the first six matchups. The teams last played Nov. 5, 2003, during the Conference USA Tournament when the Blazers advanced following a penalty kick shootout.
