Charlotte, N.C.- Charlotte 49ers men’s and women’s cross country teams ran in the right direction after coming off a tough weekend at Paul Short Run last week. The 49ers men's picked up a third place finish at the Royals Challenge on Friday afternoon.
The women’s squad did not have enough runners to compete for a team score during the Royals Challenge hosted by Queen’s College at McAlpine Creek Park. Charlotte ran five members of their women’s squad to gain experience heading into the NCAA Pre-Nationals next week in Terre Haute, Ind.
Sophomore Tiffany Lang paced the 49ers with a 21st overall finish. Lang ran a personal best running the 5k in 18:12. Senior Nicole Morgan, sophomore Lauren Pollard, juniors Tianna McHenry and Chelsea Matson ran for the 49ers. Lauren Pollard and Chelsea Matson ran unattached for the Niners.
The men’s squad looked strong in the early goings of the meet trailing a #4 Southeast region ranked Duke squad. Charlotte would finish behind Duke for a third place finish overall and a second place finish against Division I programs. This is the second time this season that the 49ers men’s squad has picked up a top three finish. "The guys did well bouncing back from a tough weekend at Paul Short. I am proud of the guys and how they finished," said Coach Ed Schlichter.
Charlotte’s top five runners placed themselves in the top 15 with junior Zach Greth and redshirt senior Ross Roberson leading the way with a fifth and eighth place finish respectively. Redshirt senior Daweet Dagnachew picked up an eleventh place finish followed by sophomore Ben Sterett and senior Eleazar Garcia for twelfth and thirteenth.
Greth and Roberson picked up awards for placing in the top 10. McAlpine Creek Park has been successful for these two this year. Greth picked up a fifth place finish a couple weeks ago at the Charlotte Invitational while Roberson placed 11th at the Charlotte Invitational. Greth ran his personal best at McAlpine Creek Park running a 25:18.3 after running a 25:18.98 last year at the Charlotte Invitational.
Sophomores Eli Clevenger (16), Getisso Dentamo (17), Michael Tamayo (18), Nicholas Rotz (21), Phillip Hathaway (23), Michael Colven(24), Marcus Rinehardt (26), and freshman Carl Walton Jr. (28) placed for the Niners in Division I.
The men’s and women’s teams head to Terre Haute, Ind. next week for the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet, October 19 to tune up for the Conference USA Championships in Denton, Texas in November.
