CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
The Charlotte women’s soccer program will be back on the road in Conference USA action this weekend, when it makes its longest trip of the season to Texas for two contests. The 49ers open the stretch with a 9 p.m. EST Friday start against UTEP in El Paso, Texas, before meeting up with North Texas at 2 p.m. EST Sunday in Denton, Texas.
Charlotte currently locked into a three-way tie for first place in the league’s East Division with UAB and Middle Tennessee. The trio has each earned seven points with identical 2-1-1 records through the first two weekends of conference play. The 49ers are 7-4-1 overall entering the venture to the Lone Star State. Amanda Jones
earned the Oct. 7 Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week with her two goals over the weekend, following a score against UTSA and the game-tying goal against Middle Tennessee. She moved back into the team lead with five goals and 12 points, while also topping the squad with 30 shots.
Ten different Niners have tallied scores this fall and 12 have posted assists, led by Maddie Kiebel
Charlotte will be looking to play a complete 90 minutes in each contest, as it has often been the second half when the offense has generated its most action. The 49ers have outscored their opponents 14-to-3 during the second 45 minutes.
UTEP owns a 9-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 C-USA mark, earning a third-place tie in the West Division. The Miners are unbeaten in their last three games. Azia Nicholson paces head coach Kevin Cross’ squad with seven goals. Her scoring output and 16 overall points place her third in the overall C-USA statistics.
Jade Babcock leads UTEP with four assists and 36 shots, ranking among the top five in the conference in both categories.
North Texas plays host to UTSA Friday before welcoming the Niners to town. The Mean Green are 7-5-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference action as the weekend begins. John Hedlund’s team dropped a pair of league road contests last weekend at Rice and Colorado College.
Rachel Holden, a two-time Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, has poured in 10 goals and added an assist for 21 points in her first collegiate season. She has tallied three game winners and placed 25.0 percent of her shots in between the pipes.
Karla Pineda’s five assists top the squad, edging out the four by Amber Haggerty. Overall, North Texas has 26 assists on its 30 goals as a team.
This weekend’s action will mark the first in the series against either program for the 49ers and the first away contests against West Division foes.
