Charlotte, N.C.- The Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer team squares off with Conference USA foe Old Dominion, Wednesday October 9 at 7 pm at Transamerica Field on Fox Sports Network.
The Niners are coming off two draws against nationally ranked Wake Forest (1-1) and conference foe New Mexico (0-0) last week. “Their focus is great, two wonderful performances last week, the guys are focused going into tomorrow night,” said Coach Kevin Langan. “We have to focus on the wins, focus on what we can control. A lot of that has to deal with our defense and shutting out teams and attacking as a team,” said redshirt senior goalkeeper Klay Davis.
Charlotte is 0-1-2 in Conference USA play and 4-3-3 heading into Wednesday’s match up against the Monarchs. Old Dominion is 4-3-1 (1-1-0) heading into the match up after falling to Kentucky 2-1 in overtime.
Charlotte and Old Dominion are familiar foes dating back to 1981. The 49ers and Monarchs were Sun Belt Conference foes throughout the 80’s. The most notable match-up between these two programs came during the 1983 Sun Belt Conference Tournament finals. Charlotte took the match 1-0 in the sixth overtime scoring in the 142nd minute. The match was official called a tie but continued play to determine a tournament winner. This meeting against the Monarchs is the 11th all-time but the first in over two decades. Old Dominion leads the series 2-5-3 with the last meeting taking place Oct. 31, 1990.
This is the first televised match this season at Transamerica Field. “We are not focused or putting our concentration on it. We are just going out there to execute our game plan and playing to our strengths and taking care of their strengths as well,” said Langan.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Klay Davis picked up Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week after his performances against Wake Forest and New Mexico. Davis picked up his fourth shutout of the season and 24th of his career. “We went to New Mexico, which is a tough place to play, it just shows that shutouts are possible every game.”
Charlotte shifts their focus into conference play with seven matches left, six of those are Conference USA foes with the lone match against Clemson. “We have been playing well, performance wise; we are just looking to translate some of those performances into wins.”
