Charlotte senior golfer Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga. / LSU) had the low score of round two, a four-under 66 and moved into a tie for second place at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Alabama to finish up a 36-hole opening day at the Old Overton Country Club.
The 49ers posted a two-over 282 in round two to sit in seventh place in the field at plus-17 (295-282 – 577) with a final round to take place Tuesday.
Castro is tied with the nation’s top-ranked golfer, Texas A&M’s Ben Crancer, four strokes behind UAB’s Wilson McDonald, at the top of the leader board. They are just three of the seven players under par after two rounds on the Par-70, 7,204-yard course.
Castro had a double-bogey on his second hole of the afternoon round, but reeled off six birdies in his last 13 holes to post the 66 for the best of the afternoon. That followed his even-par opening round for his total (70-66 – 136).
Sophomore Thomas Rowland (Consett, England / St. Bedes Catholic School and Sixth Form College) had a birdie and three bogeys for a two-over 72 and sits in a tie for 17th overall at three-over (71-72 – 143).
Junior Raoul Menard (Ange-Gardien, Quebec / Beaulieu) rallied after a 77 in the opening round to an even-par 70 in the afternoon for a tie for 30th individually. His second round started with three bogeys before he was able to drop four birdies, ending with a bogey and two pars for the level 70 score. He has birdied the second and sixth roles in both rounds.
The 49ers will tee off from the tenth hole with Vanderbilt and UTSA at 9:50 a.m. Eastern Tuesday morning to complete the tournament.
