ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Behind a stellar defensive effort, the Charlotte 49ers (4-3-3, C-USA: 0-1-2) tied New Mexico (5-3-2, C-USA: 1-0-1), 0-0, in double overtime on the road.
This game was a matchup of two teams that have enjoyed success in the last two NCAA Tournaments. Charlotte reached the College Cup Championship game in 2011 and the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season. New Mexico has reached the Sweet Sixteen in each of the last two NCAA Tournaments.
“I am so proud of our guys,” Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. “It was a phenomenal performance on the road. From the first whistle we were the aggressor. I could not be prouder of our guys to play a team on the road that has been a national power for the past few years and to put in that type of performance is absolutely incredible.”
The Charlotte 49ers defense led by goalkeeper Klay Davis and defenders Biko Bradnock-Brennan, Thomas Allen, Anthony Perez, Luke Waechter and Nick Barnhorst held New Mexico scoreless and limited New Mexico to only two shots on goal. Davis recorded his 25th career shutout.
