Charlotte, N.C.- The Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer team played #20 Wake Forest to a 1-1 (2OT) draw in front of a large crowd of 2,872 at Transamerica Field on Tuesday evening. The attending crowd was tied for third largest in program history.
The 49ers had plenty of opportunities in the first half outshooting the Demon Deacons 12-3. Anthony Perez and Giuseppe Gentile missed the mark early in the first half missing the net on both sides. Midway through the first half Wake Forest fouled Gentile near the top of the 18 yard box. Charlotte capitalized on the free kick finding the back of the net by Gentile in the 25th minute on a low line drive past the defending wall into the near corner.
“It was a set piece for us. I wanted to hit it in the bottom corner and that’s where it ended up for us,” said Giuseppe Gentile.
The Demon Deacons posted two shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes with the most dangerous shot coming with just under ten minutes to go. Luca Gimenez attempted a chip shot from inside the box, but Klay Davis punched the attempt away to keep the 1-0 advantage.
The Niners played tough defense throughout the first half taking a 1-0 advantage into the locker room.
Wake Forest played strong in the second half racking up ten shots, half of them on goal. Ian Harkes put two shots on goal early in the second half one saved by Davis and the other missing high over the cross bar. “They (Wake Forest) played hard for the first thirty minutes of the second half, but we fought back and kept playing.”
Davis kept the Demon Deacons at bay until the 73rd minute when Michael Gamble found the back of the net off the foot of Phillip Parker for the equalizer.
During the two overtime periods neither team could find the back of the net. Gentile and Nick Barnhorst had looks inside the box late but could not capitalize on the touch.
“It was an incredible game; they left it all on the field. Their mindset was fantastic; they wanted to win the game. Tonight’s game felt like an NCAA tournament game,” said Coach Kevin Langan.
Klay Davis finished the match with six saves on the night, four of them coming in the second half. Giuseppe Gentile led the Niners with seven shots. Monbo Bokar and Brandt Bronico collected two shots, while Will Mayhew, Aidan Kirkbride, Tyler Gibson, and Anthony Perez recorded one.
Charlotte heads to Albuquerque, N.M. to take on #24 (College Soccer News) New Mexico Lobos, Friday, Oct. 4 at 9 P.M.
