CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte women’s basketball team will hit the hardwood for the first time with a three-hour practice slated for Monday afternoon inside the Charles Hayward Memorial Practice Gym. The 49ers will be on the court from 1:30-4:30 p.m., as they begin the third season under head coach Cara Consuegra.
Consuegra’s group is coming off a 26-6 campaign in which it reached the WNIT Sweet 16 for the second time in three seasons. Seven letterwinners and two starters return to this year’s squad, which re-enters Conference USA action for the first time since 2004-05 after competing for the last eight seasons in the Atlantic 10.
The Niners will be looking to earn their 12th-straight postseason appearance this year. Charlotte is currently one of only 12 schools nationally, and the lone non-BCS program to reach the postseason in each of the last 11 years.
Back among the first five for 2013-14 will be senior Ny Hammonds, a 2013 All-Atlantic 10 Third Team choice, and junior Hillary Sigmon, a 2012 All-Atlantic 10 Rookie Team selection. Hammonds set single-season school records for assists (209) and minutes played (1101) a year ago as she emerged as the 49ers’ point guard. Sigmon remained the team’s top 3-point threat, connecting on a career-best 67 from behind the arc to rank third on Charlotte’s single-season list.
Also in upperclassmen roles for this year’s team will be juniors Ayanna Holmes and Olivia Rankin, along with the return of redshirt junior Gabby Tyler, who missed all of 2012-13 due to injury.
Alexis Alexander, Tori Carter and Kira Gordon comprise the sophomore class. The freshmen group is made up of Tanisha Brown, Mylia “Meme” Garner, Ciara Gregory, Kenya Olley and Danielle Webster.
The Niners open the campaign with a Nov. 2 home exhibition contest against Johnson C. Smith before welcoming Liberty to town, Nov. 8, for the regular-season opener. Charlotte will play 13 non-conference games before starting the Conference USA slate Jan. 8, 2014, against Old Dominion, inside Halton Arena.
