Charlotte volleyball surged late, but could not overcome a tough Florida Atlantic team in a 3-1 road loss (25-21, 25-16, 18-25, 25-21) at the FAU Arena in Boca Raton, Fla. Sunday afternoon. Charlotte falls to 10-7, 0-2 in Conference USA, while the Owls get their first league win and improve to 8-6, 1-1 in league play.
The first set went back and forth, with five ties and a pair of lead changes, but the Owls put together a crucial 7-1 run in the late stages to push ahead and win the opening set. FAU came out hot, hitting .343 in the first frame.
The teams traded the first two points of the second set, but after leading 2-1, FAU never lost the lead again in the remainder, hitting an astounding .433 in the stanza, taking a 2-0 sets lead to the locker room at intermission.
The third set was nearly the opposite of the second, with Charlotte taking a 2-0 lead, FAU tying it at five, but Charlotte not trailing after that. The 49ers had their best set of the match, outhitting the Owls .333 to .103 to win the lone set of the afternoon.
The fourth set featured eight ties and three lead changes, but most of the action was late, as Charlotte held the lead all the way until FAU tied it at nine in the frame. At that point, the lead changed hands a bunch, with numerous ties until the 19-all point of the set, when FAU scored two straight points and finished with a 6-2 run to close out the match.
