“Thought we started the game very well, putting them on their back foot,” Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. “As the game settled down, I was really happy with that mentality. We were on the front foot, probing and asking questions. I thought it was a complete performance, very professional performance by us today.”
Charlotte scored their first goal when Will Mayhew beat a UCF defender down the right side of the field. He passed the ball to a streaking Gentile who put the ball off the cross bar and into the goal in the 51st minute. Gentile’s goal was his fourth of the season and the 23rd of his career.
Then, Parker gave the 49ers a 2-0 lead when he blasted a shot from the top of the box into the upper right corner of the goal in the 86th minute, giving Mayhew his second assist on the night. Parker’s goal was his second of the season and the fourth of his career.
Charlotte’s defense behind the play of goalkeeper Klay Davis and defenders David Mayer, Nick Barnhorst, Thomas Allen, Anthony Perez, Luke Waechter and Biko Bradnock-Brennan was stellar as they limited UCF to four shots and only one shot on goal for their fourth shutout of the season. Davis recorded his 23.5 shutout of his career.
Charlotte finished the game with a 20-4 advantage in shots and a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks. The 49ers had 12 shots in the first half and eight shots in the second half. Gentile led the 49ers with eight shots. Mayer and Will Mayhew each tallied three shots. While, Parker added two shots to Charlotte’s attack.
The 49ers had a great scoring chance early when Aidan Kirkbride blasted the ball from 25 yards out but his shot was punched out by UCF’s goalkeeper Zach Biggs in the ninth minute. Then, Monbo Bokar had a great scoring chance when he blasted a shot just inside the box toward the far right post but UCF’s goalkeeper Biggs punched the ball out at the last second in the 43rd minute.
Charlotte returns to Conference USA when they play South Carolina at Transamerica Field, Friday, September 27 at 7 pm.
