Charlotte volleyball got one set away from tying the school record for consecutive sets won, but fell 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 27-25, 25-19) to Elon in what proved to be the championship match of the 49er Invitational at Halton Arena Saturday night. The 49ers slip to 9-5, ending a six-match win streak. Elon improved to 8-7 after the victory.
The 49ers led the entire way in the opening set to win their 19th consecutive set. The second set went south for Charlotte, with a hitting percentage of just .162 for the frame. Charlotte hit just .146 for the match.
The third set was a marathon, with 14 tie scores and 10 lead changes in the fracas.
Elon was able to lead the entire way in the fourth to close out the match.
Senior Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) paced the 49ers offense with 13 kills. She was one dig away from a double-double. She and sophomore setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) were named to the All-Tournament team. Held had 36 assists to go with six digs and four kills.
Sophomore libero Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse) had a match-best 17 digs.
Charlotte will play its final non-conference match of the season Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against Gardner-Webb.
