CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
The Charlotte women’s soccer team will put a stamp on its non-conference schedule with a pair of matches this weekend. The 49ers open the set with a 7 p.m. Friday home contest against College of Charleston before traveling the short distance to Davidson, N.C., to face cross-county rival Davidson at 6 p.m. Sunday.
Charlotte brings a 4-2 record into the weekend, including a 3-1 mark at home in front of Niner Nation at Transamerica Field. The Niners have not played for a week, since playing host to James Madison last Friday.
Against the Dukes, juniors Jessica Ryan
and Amanda Jones
both scored, making them the only multi-goal scorers thus far this fall. Jones’ three goals edge Ryan’s pair, though the latter has netted scores in each of the last two matches.
Senior Alex Kubrick
has played all 557:56 in the cage, posting a 0.97 goals-against average with three shutouts and 27 saves. She anchors a defensive unit that has permitted opponents to register score a goal or less in four games.
Three-straight setbacks to Kent State and on the road at SEC foes Auburn and Georgia puts College of Charleston at 2-6 heading into Friday’s meeting. The Cougars, who switched conferences this season to the Colonial Athletic Association, are making the Niners their final non-conference foe of 2013.
Mccallie Jones paces head coach Christian Michner’s squad with three goals, while Victoria Fichman has added a pair. CofC has been outscored 21-8 in its eight matches, surrendering a high of six at Illinois in its first road game, Aug. 30.
Charlotte holds a 3-0 all-time series lead against the Cougars, claiming a 2-1 victory in last year’s season opener. Friday’s match will mark the first in the series to be played in Charlotte.
Davidson, who also played host to James Madison last weekend, will not play again until the Niners make the trek Sunday. The Wildcats, under the direction of head coach Greg Aston, are 0-5-3 after losing their last four by a combined 9-1.
The goal, at Winthrop last Friday, is the only one for Davidson this season and was put between the pipes by Dani Johnson. Meanwhile, the ’Cats defense has limited foes to just 11 goals, including a pair of scoreless ties at the FGCU Tournament against FGCU and Florida Atlantic.
The 49ers own an 11-4-2 all-time lead in the series, including a 5-2-2 advantage on the road. However, Davidson captured a 1-0 triumph in last year’s meeting at Transamerica Field and the two teams tied in 2011 during the last contest at Davidson.
Live video and live stats will be available for Friday’s match through Charlotte49ers.com, while links for both during Sunday’s contest will also be posted to the website. Updates for both games are also on Twitter by following @49erGameDay.
At Friday’s match, members of the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte will be on-hand to collect monetary donations. The 49ers women’s soccer team spent time at the home earlier this week as part of its community service.
