The 21st-ranked Charlotte 49ers (2-1) will play 8th-ranked UAB (3-0) and Memphis (3-1) at the UAB Soccer For A Cure Classic in Birmingham, Alabama this weekend, September 13th and 15th. First, the 49ers play host UAB in their Conference USA opener, Friday, September 13 at 8 pm. Friday’s game will mark the 49ers first Conference USA game since a 4-1 victory over DePaul, October 30, 2004. Then, the 49ers conclude play in the Classic against Memphis, Sunday, September 15 at 1 pm.

Since 1990, the 49ers are 16-7 in their conference opener. In 1995, the 49ers defeated Memphis at home, 6-1, in their first-ever Conference USA game. Charlotte has won four of their last five conference openers.

Charlotte enters the weekend’s action with road wins over Denver and 12th-ranked Coastal Carolina. Giuseppe Gentile leads the 49ers with three goals. Aidan Kirkbride scored the game-winning goal in the 49ers 2-1 win at Coastal Carolina last Friday. Six 49ers are tied for the team lead with one assist apiece. Goalkeeper Klay Davis earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording a shutout in the 49ers 2-0 road win at Denver, August 30.

Friday’s Charlotte-UAB game will mark the 28th meeting between the two teams. The 49ers lead the all-time series 15-9-3. Despite the two teams not being in the same conference before this year since 2004, this game will mark the fifth meeting between the two teams in the last four years. Charlotte and UAB have played each other in the last two NCAA Tournaments. The 49ers won both NCAA Tournament games including a 3-2 victory in the first round of  last season’s NCAA Tournament at Transamerica Field, November 15, 2012. Gentile scored the game-winning goal in that game. Former 49ers standout Jennings Rex scored Charlotte’s first two goals in Charlotte’s 2012 NCAA Tournament victory over UAB. Charlotte defeated UAB, 3-1, in their last meeting in Birmingham which came in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament, November 20, 2011.

Sunday’s Charlotte-Memphis game will mark the 14th meeting between the two teams. Charlotte leads the all-time series, 8-3-2. Charlotte defeated Memphis, 4-0, in their last meeting which was in the 2010 UAB Soccer For A Cure Classic in Birmingham, September 11, 2010.
