CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte women’s soccer will celebrate Family Weekend with a 7 p.m. Friday home contest against James Madison at Transamerica Field. The Niners will be playing in their fourth home match among the season’s first half-dozen games.
Charlotte enters the match after raising its record to 4-1 with a 1-0 victory at Western Carolina Sunday. Junior Jessica Ryan netted her first career goal, while senior Alex Kubrick saved seven Catamounts shots for her third shutout of the campaign. Kubrick is tied for first among all Conference USA netminders with her trio of clean sheets. She is also among the league’s top-five leaders for save percentage (88.5, third), goals-against average (0.58, fourth) and saves (23, tied for fourth).
Ryan’s score gives the 49ers four players with goals thus far, while six different players have registered an assist. Among those with a single point for an assist, sophomore Maddie Kiebel leads the charge with eight shots. Junior Amanda Jones, who is the team’s only multi-goal scorer, also is tops with 11 shots, including eight on goal. Both of her goals were game winners, placing her in a tie for second in Conference USA.
Charlotte’s 4-1 start ties for the second best in program history through the season’s opening five matches. Only the 2002 squad’s 5-0 mark surpassed the 4-1 ledger attained by the 1998, 2009 and 2013 teams.
James Madison brings a 3-3 record into the matchup, having traded wins and losses in each of its six games this fall. The Dukes, like the 49ers, faced Virginia Tech last weekend and dropped a 3-1 decision Sunday afternoon. JMU opened the season with a pair of foes Charlotte was familiar with from its Atlantic 10 days, Richmond and La Salle.
Meghan Cox and Ashley Herndon each have tallied a team-lead tying two goals for coach David Lombardo’s squad.
Ellen Forrest has been the lone player to see time between the pipes, posting a 1.83 goals-against average with 24 saves during the six matches.
The two teams have met a pair of times previously with each program earning one victory. Charlotte knocked off James Madison 1-0 in double overtime last season in Harrisonburg, Va., while the first meeting came during the 2002 NCAA Tournament First Round at Transamerica Field.
