Charlotte volleyball put together its first win streak of the season, following up Friday night’s win over Chattanooga with a 3-1 victory (25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 27-25) Saturday over UNC Asheville in the early match of day three of the Comfort Inns and Suites Invitational, hosted by UT-Chattanooga. Charlotte leveled its season mark to 3-3 with one match to go to conclude the weekend. The Bulldogs slip to 4-3 on the season.
Sophomore setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) had her fourth double-double of the season with 55 assists and 12 digs, also hitting at a .412 attack percentage with seven kills and no errors in 17 attempts to lead the 49ers to the victory.
The 49ers were able to side-out (score off of the opponent’s serve) against Asheville at a 64 percent rate. Charlotte’s .276 tram attack percentage was a season high en route to the four-set victory.
Charlotte jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set and never lost the lead. Senior Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) had four of her game-high-tying 16 kills in the opening frame.
The second set was a real battle, with 13 tie scores and six lead changes. With the score tied at 23, Asheville recorded a pair of blocks to close out the set and even the match heading into intermission.
The 49ers trailed at 1-0 in the third, but not again in the third, reeling off a season-best .361 attack percentage in the set. Sophomore Sarah McDonald (Snoqualmie, Wash. / Mount Si HS) posted six of her 16 kills in the third set.
The fourth set had eight ties, including all points from 20 to 25, and four lead changes as the 49ers played their 13th of 24 sets to within four points or less. Videmsek logged six kills in the finale set, to go with nine digs from sophomore libero Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse) in the set. She finished with a game-high total of 26 for the afternoon, giving her 129 and an average of 5.38 per set.
Senior Taylor Cannon (Elizabeth City, N.C. / Camtech HS) added 13 kills, with freshman Claire Kreuz (Boerne, Tex. / Samuel Champion HS) registering 10. Redshirt freshman Jackie Servais (Larkspur, Colo. / Douglas County HS) contributed 13 digs, with freshman Morgan Barker (Holly Springs, N.C.) adding 11.
Charlotte will take on Tennessee tonight at 6 p.m. to close out the weekend.
