After a rough start, Charlotte volleyball rallied to win the last three sets to outlast host Chattanooga 3-2 (25-27, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-8) in the nightcap of Friday’s action at the Country Inns and Suites Invitational. The 49ers (2-3) set season highs in all major statistical categories in the win, their first five-set win this season. The 49ers are 10-3 in their last 13 five-set matches under head coach Chris Redding.

Sophomore setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) was one kill shy of her first career triple-double, with career-totals of 54 assists, 21 digs and nine kills in the winning effort. Senior middle hitter and team captain Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) had her second double-double of the season and her career with a team-best 20 kills, adding 11 digs. She was one off her career-best day with six blocks. Sophomore libero Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse) broke the school record with 38 digs in the win.

The loss dropped the host Mocs to 0-5 on the season. Charlotte held Chattanooga to a negative attack percentage in the fifth and tiebreaking set.

The 49ers led for the majority of the opening set, losing the lead only after the score was tied at 24. For the fifth time this season in five matches and 20 sets, Charlotte played a set past the 25-point goal, with a win only secured when winning by two. A Mocs kill and a Charlotte attack error ended the opening set after a 25-all tie.

Charlotte held the lead in the second set until Chattanooga took over the lead at 11-all and never lost it again to enter the intermission with a 2-0 sets lead and a clear path to the first win of the season.

Charlotte turned up the heat in the third set, jumping out to a quick 13-5 margin in that frame. Videmsek posted five kills with no errors, to go with four digs and a block in that frame as the 49ers hit their match high of a .295 attack percentage.

The fourth set was the only one that featured two lead changes in a closer frame. The 49ers managed to start to pull away after the score was tied at nine, but the Mocs kept it close until Held secured the set with a kill at 24-20 Niners.

The 49ers forced the negative attack percentage in the fifth set thanks to four big team blocks in the stanza. Charlotte needed only six kills on five Held assists in the final period, scoring points on eight of nine Mocs serves to close out the match.

Hovey pushed her season digs-per-set average over five, now with 103 digs in 20 sets for the year.

The 49ers will play at noon Saturday against UNC Asheville before finishing the weekend with a 6 p.m. contest with Tennessee.
