Denver, CO – Behind two Giuseppe Gentile goals and a stellar defensive effort, the 18th-ranked Charlotte 49ers (1-0) defeated Denver (0-1), 2-0, on the road in their season opener. With the win, the 49ers have won their season opener for three straight seasons.
“I was very pleased with our performance,” Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. “Denver is a tough place to play. I was delighted with the fitness of our team and the way we performed in the high altitude of Denver. In the second half, we really passed the ball well. We scored two fantastic goals.”
In the 60th minute, Anthony Perez passed the ball to Will Mayhew who found Gentile who beat Denver’s goalkeeper Oliver Brown putting the ball in the back of the net for the 49ers first goal of the season.
In the 89th minute, Luke Waechter passed to Gentile who beat Denver’s goalkeeper Brown and blasted a shot into an empty net giving the 49ers a 2-0 lead. Gentile’s two goals give him 21 goals for his career.
Charlotte goalkeeper Klay Davis recorded two saves for his 21st career shutout.
“It was great getting a shutout on the road,” Langan said. “Denver had physical strikers and our backline of Anthony (Perez), Thomas (Allen), Biko (Bradnock-Brennan) and Luke (Waechter) stood very firm and strong. Also, Klay really played well in goal.”
In the 15th minute, Parker nearly scored the game’s first goal but his shot was just stopped at the last second by Denver’s goalkeeper Brown.
Next, the 49ers will host UNCG in their home opener at Transamerica Field, Tuesday, September 3 at 7 pm.
