Charlotte volleyball freshman Claire Kreuz (Boerne, Tex / Samuel V. Champion HS) tied for the team lead with 13 kills in her collegiate debut, but the 49ers opened the season Friday afternoon with a 3-1 loss (25-17, 28-30, 25-15, 29-27) at the hands of CSU Bakersfield to open the Wildcat Classic, hosted by Davidson College.

Kreuz shared the team lead with sophomore Sarah McDonald (Snoqualmie, Wash. / Mount Si HS), who put together a career-high effort in the loss.

Two of the four sets went to extra points, including the 49ers’ lone set victory, a 30-28 marathon. The 49ers outhit the Roadrunners .269 to .262 in that frame, but were held to a .227 attack percentage in the match overall. McDonald led the team with a .379 attack percentage.

The Roadrunners collected 11 service aces in the match, while the 49ers had nine service errors.

Setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) collected her third –career double-double, with 48 assists and 10 digs in the match.

Sophomore Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse) paced Charlotte with 15 digs, with freshman Morgan Barker (Holly Springs, N.C.) adding 12.

Charlotte will take on host Davidson tonight at 7 p.m. to finish out the opening day of the classic.
