A trip to Japan to compete in the Topy Cup highlights the 2013-14 Charlotte 49ers men’s golf schedule, as the program tries to extend its school-record streak of 10 consecutive trips to the NCAA postseason and transition to Conference USA. Charlotte will travel to eight different states for their 10 regular-season tournaments and conference championship, starting with the overseas trip to Japan, which is 13 hours ahead of the Eastern Time Zone.
"We are very excited to have such a fantastic schedule for 2013-2014,” said Niners head coach Ryan Cabbage, the 2013 Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year. “We will be competing against great competition in every event that we play in, on fantastic golf courses all over the country and all over the world with our trip to the Topy Cup in Japan. What a great experience for our team."
The 49ers will start the season with the week-long trip to Japan, joining Washington, TCU and fellow C-USA member UAB at the Tanagura Country Club in Tanagura, Japan. Last year, four Japanese universities faced off again four from the United States in the three-round Topy Cup. Japanese universities have captured the event 14 of 19 times, with Tohoku Fukushi University winning last season’s event. The golf will be 18 holes per day from September 10-12. The teams will tee off at 8 a.m. local time on Tuesday the 10th, which will be Monday evening at 7 p.m. in Charlotte.
The 49ers will make repeat appearances in the Rees Jones Collegiate at Daufuskie Island, S.C., the Rod Myers Invitational at Duke and the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif., while also adding the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala. this fall.
The spring semester begins with the same four tournaments that Charlotte competed in this spring, with trips to the Bayou City Intercollegiate in Humble, Texas, the Auburn Tiger Shootout and Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga. before the 49ers host the Irish Creek Intercollegiate on April 5-6 in Kannapolis.
Charlotte will next year play in the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio in 2014 to finish the regular season. That will be contested at the Ohio State Golf Club – Scarlet Course, where the 49ers competed in the NCAA Regionals this past season. The 49ers will then take on 13 other Conference USA programs in the Conference Championships, to be contested at the Texarkana CC in Texarkana, Ark. from April 20-22.
"We will be tested every week and will need to play at the highest level,” added Cabbage. “With that being said, I am really excited about this team and can't wait to get everyone back on campus to get the season started"
All but one player returns from last season’s squad, which posted six finishes of fourth or better in its first 11 events, including capturing their seventh A-10 Tournament Championship in eight seasons.
