The Charlotte volleyball coaching staff announces the additions of a pair of liberos to this fall’s squad with sophomore transfer Jackie Servais and freshman Morgan Barker joining the 49ers for play this fall.
“I am very excited to announce the addition of two more players to our 2013 class,” said Charlotte head coach Chris Redding. “Our staff worked extremely hard this spring to find players that can give us added depth in our ball control. We were fortunate to be able to gain two outstanding players to bolster our roster for the 2013 season as we move into Conference USA.”
Servais, who hails from Larkspur, Colorado, transfers in from Ole Miss, though she did not play for the Rebels last season. She was named one of the top female athletes in Douglas County in 2011-12, earning All-Conference honors her senior year for the Douglas County High Huskies. She was a two-time Academic All-Conference honoree and was a member of the National Honor Society. She played her club volleyball for Club 5280 in Denver.
She is the daughter of Jill and Scott Servais. Her father had a ten-year Major League Baseball career and was a catcher on Team USA in 1988, when USA won gold in the Seoul Olympics. Team USA played Cuba in an exhibition at Phillips Field on the UNC Charlotte campus on August 20, 1988, beating the Cubans 12-2.
“What caught our eye with Jackie is her passion and fire,” said Redding. “Right from the start of the recruitment process, Jackie knew what she was looking for; a program where she can work hard, improve and compete to be on the court. With opportunity in front of her, we think Jackie will bring her competitive fire to the court and help make our defense more tenacious.”
Barker played for the Holly Springs Golden Hawks, which made the North Carolina State Volleyball Finals in 2011 and 2013 after finishing third in the Tri-Nine Conference in both of those seasons. She was named First-Team All-Conference by the league and Wake County, finishing second with 9.1 digs per set with her 494 digs for the season, listed as ninth-most in the country by Max Preps.com. Her Club Red team earned a spot in Junior Nationals in 2011 and 2012, finishing second in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 Regional Championships. Also participating in beach volleyball, she was the 18U Defensive Player of the Year in the Carolina Region at the Junior Beach Championship last summer. Her parents are Julie and Tracey Barker of Holly Springs, N.C.
“What impressed us most about Morgan is how steady she is on the court,” added Redding. “Morgan is an excellent defensive specialist; she is a strong defender and a consistent passer. We jumped at the opportunity to add someone of Morgan’s ability to our back court. Off the court, Morgan has unbelievable work ethic and is a conscientious person. She is a great fit for our program on and off the court.”
Servais and Barker will add to last fall’s additions of outside hitters Abreia Epps and Claire Kreuz and middle blocker Hayden Lucht to join eight returning players to usher the program back into Conference USA this fall. Charlotte begins with the Green and White Scrimmage on Saturday, August 24 and starts the regular season on Friday, August 30 at the Wildcat Classic at Davidson. The 49ers’ home opener will be Friday, September 20 in the Hilton University Invite against South Carolina State. Charlotte’s first match back in Conference USA will be a week later, Friday September 27 at FIU. The Niners will play all 14 conference teams once in the conference regular season before a 12-team field descends on Murfreesboro, Tennessee for the C-USA Tournament at Middle Tennessee from November 21-24.
