Charlotte 49ers redshirt freshman catcher Brett Lang (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS) was named 2013 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-American Second Team, the organization announced today.
A total of 32 standout freshmen college baseball players from every part of the country are featured on the Freshman All-American Team. The 2013 NCBWA Freshman All-American Team features players from 15 conferences and five conference championship teams. The two All-American squads are also made up of nine conference “Rookie of the Year” winners. In addition, one conference “Pitcher of the Year” and 17 all-conference honorees were named to the team.
Lang was a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Rookie Team. He missed two weeks at end of regular season, but still finished with 40 RBI, tied for third on the team and tied for eighth in Atlantic 10 Conference, the only freshman in the league's Top 10 in RBI. He led all freshman catchers nominated in RBI. Lang tied for team lead with four home runs, which tied him for 16th in A-10. The 49ers won all four games in which he homered. He collected 17 two-out RBI, which were third-most on the team. His 10 bases-loaded RBI were second-most on team. Lang played 27 games for Charlotte at catcher, another 21 as the designated hitter and parts of seven at first base. He earned a spot on the Dean's List in the fall and earned A-10 Rookie of the Week on March 25.
Lang is the 16th player from Charlotte named either a Freshman All-American or Honorable Mention to a Freshman All-America list. Pitcher Tyler Barnette was last named to a Freshman All-America team, in 2011, the only other 49er named by the NCBWA following the season.
Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport. For more information about the NCBWA, visit the association's official Web site, www.ncbwa.com.
