Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade announced Monday the recipients of the annual A-10 Postgraduate Scholarship. For the fifth year in eight seasons of league membership, Charlotte had a student-athlete earn one of these scholarships, with senior infielder Shane Basen of the baseball program winning one of the four awarded this year.
Each recipient will receive $5,000 to contribute to their graduate education. All four student-athletes have performed with distinction both in the classroom and in their respective sports throughout their career, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community. The selections are made by a panel of five Faculty Athletic Representatives from Atlantic 10 member institutions. The recipients of the A-10 Postgraduate Scholarship are required to use their scholarship toward postgraduate education expenses.
The Atlantic 10 ranks second among 31 conferences in the most recent NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR). The league was also rated third in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) by the NCAA last year. This year’s full APR report is due out June 11.
“The Postgraduate Scholarship is one of our highest awards and one that I am especially proud to present to these four distinguished student-athletes. The award honors the academic side of college athletics, which the Atlantic 10 takes great pride in, as evidenced by our expansion of the program,” McGlade said. “I congratulate each of our honorees for an outstanding undergraduate careers and a dedication by each of them to being true student-athletes.”
There were 20 applicants from 10 different institutions. This marks the first time in eight years that male applicants earned two of the four scholarships. By rule, the scholarships are awarded to four student-athletes (one male, one female and two others).
Basen, a senior infielder and captain on the 49ers baseball team, finished his undergraduate work as an Accounting and Finance Major. He is a finalist for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award, and was last week named a Capital One/CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American, his second Academic All-American award. A three-time selection on the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team and a four-year member of the A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, Basen also was on the Chancellor’s List all four years at Charlotte. A native of Waxhaw, N.C., he was involved in multiple business and marketing associations, including serving as a member of the UNC Charlotte Business Honors Program and the Deloitte Local Leadership Conference. A standout athlete, he was named Second Team All-Conference as a junior and made the All-Championship team as a freshman. Basen has earned a scholarship earned from Deloitte and Touche, along with a graduate assistantship awarded by Charlotte and will attend Charlotte’s Master’s of Accountancy Program with the goal of being a CPA.
Basen is the second baseball student-athlete from Charlotte to win back-to-back Capital One Academic All-America awards and paced the 49ers with 49 runs batted in, second-most in the conference.
The former Marvin Ridge High star started all but one game either at third base or shortstop for Charlotte in the past two-plus seasons, including the last 150 Charlotte contests. Basen started a total 198 games and played in 10 more. He finishes his career tied for the fifth-most triples (11) in team history, eighth in defensive assists (494), 11th in games started and tied for 12th in games played. He is also in the Top 20 in program history in RBI (17th, 143) and stolen bases (tied-18th, 41).
Basen and Saint Louis’ Alex Alemann are just the third and fourth baseball players to earn the Postgraduate Scholarship and the first since Duquesne’s Rocky Kravetz in 1999-2000. Basen is the fifth Charlotte athlete and Aleman the eighth Billiken to earn the honor. Joining Basen on Charlotte’s all-time award list are Macey Ruble (2011-12) and Lamarra Currie (2008-09) from track and field, Adam Gross (2009-10) from men’s soccer and Jane Daniels (2006-07) of Cross Country/Track & Field who won the award in five of eight years of league membership.
