Charlotte, NC – Charlotte 49ers head coach Alan Major has announced that 6-0 guard Braxton Ogbueze has transferred from the University of Florida to Charlotte. Ogbueze, who is from Charlotte, North Carolina, will sit out the 2013-14 season in accordance with NCAA rules and have three years of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2014-15 season.
He played his final two years of high school basketball at Charlotte’s United Faith Christian Academy. He also played two years of high school basketball at Charlotte’s Vance High School.
“Braxton is a player we recruited out of high school and we are thrilled that he is coming back home to play for the 49ers,” Major said. “He has terrific guard skills and is an outstanding young man. Braxton will be a great addition to our program.”
Ogbueze, who was a consensus top-100 recruit, saw action in 23 games as a freshman at the University of Florida this past season. He scored 31 points to help United Faith defeat number one ranked Oak Hill, 90-88, in a game that was played at the Greensboro Coliseum in January, 2011. He played his junior year at United Faith with current 49ers guard Ivan Benkovic.
Ogbueze comes from an athletic family, his father Godwin Ogbueze played soccer at Clemson from 1975-79. He ranks eighth on Clemson’s all-time goal scoring list with 46 career goals.
“I am excited to come back home and play for the Charlotte 49ers,” Ogbueze said. “It will be great to play in my hometown in front of my friends and family.”
Ogbueze joins a 49ers recruiting class that includes 6-8 Georgia high school standout forward Cameron Blakely, Clemson transfer 6-7 forward Bernard Sullivan and Tulane transfer 6-2 guard Ben Cherry.
With a young lineup that often featured five freshmen and sophomores on the court, Charlotte went 21-12 last season and earned a post-season berth in the NIT.
