After a weekend sweep of Dayton to win their last nine home conference games of the year, the Charlotte 49ers had a pair of players named to the Atlantic 10 Conference weekly awards list. Junior outfielder Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS) was named Player of the Week, while senior John Hamilton (Strongsville, Ohio) was named Co-Pitcher of the Week. Charlotte has won eight in a row and took sole possession of first place in the A-10 with a 16-5 mark entering the final weekend of regular-season play. Charlotte is 32-19 overall this season.
Seager had hits in all three games for the 49ers as Charlotte swept Dayton in a three-game weekend series to push their win streak to eight games in a row. The 49ers won their last nine home conference games, and finished with a 10-2 mark at home in league play in 2013. He drove in the first run of the day on Friday night and on Sunday, sending in three runs in Sunday’s 12-9 win. Seager is tied for the team lead with 10 multiple-RBI games and leads the 49ers with 20 multiple-hit games, including a team-best seven three-hit performances this season. On Sunday, one of his three hits was his league-leading 20th double of the season. He also scored two runs on Sunday, giving him a team and conference-best 42. He is tied for the league lead with 70 hits and is second in the A-10 with 40 RBI as the team leader in hitting, at .368 as one of two players to start and every game this season. This is Seager's second honor as A-10 Player of the Week, with his first honor coming back on March 18. He was tabbed conference Rookie of the Week on March 7, 2011.Hamilton tossed a career-high nine innings, turning his first complete game into a shutout as the 49ers beat visiting Dayton on Senior Day, Saturday afternoon. Hamilton’s day started with receiving his diploma in Finance in the morning before tossing a gem versus Dayton. He scattered six hits and one walk in the contest, allowing only two runners to reach third base. The Strongsville, Ohio native is 5-3 overall, 4-0 in seven conference starts, with a 3.07 season ERA. It is Hamilton's first nod as a Pitcher of the Week in 2013, but his second time winning the award in his career. As Charlotte's closer last season, he earned Pitcher of the Week on April 2, 2012.
Xavier’s Tyler Koors shared Pitcher of the Week honors with Hamilton. A native of Indianapolis, Koors delivered a complete-game shutout to lead Xavier to a 1-0 victory over Massachusetts on senior day for the Musketeers. A senior himself, Koors scattered seven hits throughout the game and did not walk a batter, while registering six strikeouts for his win.
Rhode Island left-handed pitcher Steve Moyers was tabbed as the league’s Rookie of the Week. Moyers earned his sixth A-10 start on Sunday, allowing just two hits to pick up the win in URI’s 17-1 win over Butler. Moyers took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, retiring 13 of the first 14 batters he faced and not allowing a hit until the bottom of the fifth. Overall, he allowed just one run on two hits while fanning four and holding the Bulldogs to a .118 average on the afternoon.
